The Beacon

Feijoa Bloom – my yard – April 2020

The Beacon

He calls, He calls, He calls to us …
To whom do we listen?

He seeks, He seeks, He seeks us out …
In whom do we trust?

He leads, He leads, He leads us forth …
but only as we follow

He dies, He dies, He dies for us …
In whom do we rest our souls?

Is it in Jesus we are resting?
In whose song for us is Love Unknown?
If so, we believe upon His cross;
And we pray, “Jesus keep us close!”

Quiet Calla

New Feijoa bloom ( Pineapple Guava), May 2020

Quiet Calla – Nearly Unnoticed

You may not see,
You may notice not,
The cattle on a thousand hills are mine.

You may be unawares,
You may not give care,
The sparrow falls not lest I know.

You may be surprised,
You may ever be off guard,
While waters and warmth and shade grace your way.

Yet I come for you; though waiting,
In seamless spirit and time,
Without lapse,
Without waver,
My love yours forever;
You are Mine; you are Mine; you are Mine.

Now, curl tired hand with mine dear one.
We will walk,
We will talk,
Though I know, tell me all,
… of your joy and dismay;
… of sadness; of ecstasy’s day!

For, though I fade from your sight,
Fear not, I transcend night.
No darkness hides me;
Nor beguiles me,
Though reviles me;
I AM the Light!

I love you, dearest reader,

Teach me Your Paths

Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus) blooming at St. John Lutheran Church, Cypress – July 2020

It is my prayer today that I not offend you, but, instead that you are edified by this offering of a poetic re-write of Psalm 25; as it is not scripture! Our LORD seemed to leave an approving countenance upon it and me on the July date of its writing.

In honor, humility and deference to our Creator God, I’ve begun this day, the LORD’s day, Sunday April 11, with His Words for you and not mine so the you may begin with Him and not me. If you wish to read beyond the God’s Holy Scripture, then you will encounter my words and song. If not, beloved, God bless and keep you in His care.

I love you,

Teach Me Your Paths

[a] Of David.

25 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who is the man who fears the Lord?
    Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose.
13 His soul shall abide in well-being,
    and his offspring shall inherit the land.
14 The friendship[b] of the Lord is for those who fear him,
    and he makes known to them his covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
    for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
    bring me out of my distresses.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes,
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!
    Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
    for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
    out of all his troubles.

Psalm 25 (a poetic re-writing)
A Song to the tune of Poppy Study 2
(music by God words by Sondra)

I lift my soul to You;
My trust is ever in Your care.
No enemy triumphs,
Our hope in You – no shame.

Show me Your way, O LORD.
Teach me and guide me Savior God.
Your mercy and Your love;
Great kindnesses of old –

Remember not my sins;
O Holy Father, Spirit, Son;
For You are good and kind,
My life redeemed and won.

Instruct and guide me LORD:
For Your name’s sake, I plead, dear God;
Faithful in love YOU are;
Forgive this sinner’s load.

I awe and fear You LORD;
You whisper covenants of grace.
Eyes ever on You LORD;
Your hand released the hasp.

Turn Your face to me now;
In loneliness and sorrow am I.
Guard, keep and rescue me;
In You my soul abides.

I hide in You, O LORD;
Your refuge shelters me from storm.
Preserve – Deliver me!
I wait for You the more.

I bow before you LORD;
My God upright in all You do.
Steadfast and gracious God;
My hope only in You.

Dear One, I apologize that I have not included a sound link. Perhaps soon. All my love in Jesus. Sondra

My Rigging

Lizard resting a rope – my son’s patio – April 8, 2020

My Rigging

You are my rigging, my main sail, my mast;
Your breath pushes and spurs me forth.
You are my rudder, afore and my aft;
Your wind, moon and stars my door.

Point my bow windward to the wonders of your heart,
Set my course by the stars Your eye sees,
Teach me to trust, Oh Helmsman so dear,
In Your protection through the waters too deep.

No heeling! Rescue me!
My God, refuge be!
To my eye You are all that I need.

I will follow Your compass;
True North’s only goal;
You anchor me,
to Your living soul.

Hold me starboard and port;
With your hand set my keel;
With your mighty breath,
My feeble sail fill.

With shoulders bear the oar;
Anchor me at the shore;
Mooring me in You,
for there I am made whole!

Jesus be my rigging; my mainsail; my mast!
On following seas I set sail to You at last.

Ahoy! I love you,

Tomb Stones

Who are you lying there under the earth?

One preciously begotten?

One too quickly forgotten?

Why are you resting there deep in the dirt?

Words harshly spoken?

Body in rage broken?

What was your journey?

Had you any mirth?

Did you know Jesus who cares for your hurts?

    Nails for you driven –

    Side for you riven –

    Life for you given –

    Salvation for you; Risen!

I love you,

Young Love’s Gaze: a free verse

a pause and… caught;
My eyes met his – both of his…
Oh, the warmth.
-and they pull me in;
Soft and gentle is the sparkle;
intrigue in the twinkle.
A sprinkling of magic assuredly guards this moment.
Captured am I in this serenity;
by a magnetism;
a gravitational strength;
perpetual force? Lasting to the end of time?
I cannot offer a care…
Fog surrounds and settles;
Periphery fading from view.
Away, away, away I go to it,
not sure if I should breathe in this place.
I think I cannot!
Drawing nearer.
Mind hazed in wonder;
Heart pounding in splendor;
Ear sensing the thunder and hearing none,
but the silence of all heaven in wait.
An unexpected invitation received
Saying “Come explore beyond the recesses of our trance once glance;
placid pools await;”
Longing, yes, longing for this;
tepid, safe, and beautiful.
Sumptuous, lavish and lush
I am taken;
all in;
taken by the moment.
not by touch, but a gaze.
a quiver;
perhaps a shiver;
…and away…away, it is gone.
Oh God, why this gift?

If today you want only poetry, stop and read no further, for I have broken my, this year’s, April Poetry Posting Rule which is to post poems not prose and all the other wordy stuff that I often include.

It’s ok, wait and for now bask in the moment presented in this free verse – maybe you’ll like that …and then, you may come back and read the rest in May! 😉

In case you are coming back in May and not reading further, I’ll sign off here for now.

Gazing your way and loving you, my friend,

Start here in May (after re-reading Young Love’s Gaze)!

…yes gone; not forgotten, but gone – the magical spell is broken. The baby cries, the doorbell rings, the pot boils over, it’s now your turn, he walks away, a phone call… so with moment shattered and I am called to return to the present… and so I do…OH YES, because we are still on this side of heaven; in our bedroom, in this classroom, at the table, beside the car, in the kitchen, at work, at the ball game…whatever the location time passes and the flutter of those sweet butterflies has passed.

In the moments shared before the interruption, I could have been easily mistaken regarding my whereabouts, as I was no where in this world – until suddenly I was! And so now, I return to the present…life as it is, is unfolding before me and I must give up the fantasy minute to the here and now. “Sondra!!! Wake Uu-up!!!” (or whatever the interruption) …or is it fantasy? Dear One this depends upon into whose eyes you have chosen to gaze. Yes, there are times of fulfillment, particularly among the married in which these moments become much more than a gaze, but this is a gaze, a searching into an unknown, a seeking to know that which you do not yet, and exploring for knowledge, delight and a cry for relationship and intimacy.

There is true wonderment in the thing that happens between a man and a woman through a gaze. It does not happen between every one you meet but somehow a chemistry, an uncanny drawing together of two which I’ve read it described as magical connection occurs; an opportunity presents itself and off you may run with the moment. This is part of our make up. Our mystique which pulls us together as people who couple and marry and draw close and produce more in our likenesses. It is an incredibly beautiful experience…in perfection’s context, the way God designed it and my friend it may begin with a gaze just as I have described. It may begin in being caught and drawn forth until there is no discerning two but just one or which is which. In the intertwining of body and soul there becomes but one. Even so, even in this place, there comes a return to life as it is – an interruption.

But, consider this: the plan and I mean the first Plan! I must think hard on this but no long… So, I ask you once again; into whose eyes are you gazing? Do not worry, I ask it of myself as well…Into whose eyes am I gazing? I’ve said to the LORD GOD who made us, “there must be more to this thing. Please show me more!

Beloved, we return to life as it is; just …as it is…this side of heaven complete with its interruption, disconnection, and in our descent from wherever we perceived we were, we return to the praise of God, the acknowledgement of His gift of salvation to us through Jesus’ blood, and the leaning to the Holy Spirit to guide us as we “19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” while we are ” 20 teaching them to observe all that I [Jesus] have commanded you.” knowing and trusting in his words, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” as it is playing in your world. My friend there is more! Here is our MORE – the one and the only one place in which there is no need for MORE. Consider these words of a beautiful song…and then Let’s talk!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
Look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Take a moment and let’s together walk back into that Young Love:

This may be a way to see Jesus. My love, you might have been delivered it as a moment with your God. You might have received it through the depth which you perceive from my eyes; those of your beholder! But, consider this; in a minute’s millisecond, my attention is gone; redirected, possibly never to come your way again! But precious friend perhaps you have just lived a moment with your God who will never leave you is not fleeting. (ref. Deuteronomy 31:6) He sees you and wishes for your response to Him, that you be drawn to Him for he died for you…this is Jesus’ love for you. His eyes are trained on you and they never look away, are never distracted. His love is the same unrepressed by anything you can do to disappoint Him; unfathomable in its depth; as far as the east is from the west, immutable, unchangeable in its concern for your welfare… In short, you can do nothing to cause him to disclaim you as His own except to reject him entirely!

In faith you are sanctified, that is made holy and set apart for His good purpose. Let the Holy Spirit’s work in you come to life, not to be shrouded by real estate in you which belongs to Jesus being taken up by Satan’s confounding gaze that might take away from all which God declares as good! Welcome your young love’s gaze just as you welcome Jesus into your world. Dear One, confess your sin to Jesus. He died for it! Let His cross be enough and when sin repeats, confess again. He still died for it! Do not languish in impenitence. Tell Jesus now, all of it – let Him be the healer of your soul. Turn your eyes upon Jesus with “Young Love’s” Gaze. Invite him in

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Matthew 18:20

Gazing your way Jesus, and loving you, my friend, too!

P.S. I believe that God intends for His presence to be known in every experience and so I ask Him often, “show me Your ways.” I hope you see, better yet, sense the beautiful and extraordinary picture which consumed my thoughts and feelings. He is the maker of the vast universe in which we live, of our gorgeous world over which we are directed to take dominion, and of us, who are fearfully and wonderfully made in His image. And, love, He desires an intimacy not unlike what is on this page. I believe this with all my heart.

Web of Despair

Web of Despair

Are you caught
               in a web of despair?
There is no end
               to the mercilessness there.

What seems beautiful deep care
               is but Satan’s lying snare,

Are you caught in this web of despair?

Back it down and
               in truth in love dare,
To look to Jesus
               He is hanging there,

He died for you both poor and bare;
               the price of victory’s full fare.

Are you caught in a web of despair?

Bend your knee – lifting eye,
               breaking free as you stare,
His solace sweet; His triumph final
               to whom none can compare.

Are you still caught in that web of despair?

Despair for a time if you must;
Forgiveness and repentance trust;

for in sin and filth we grovel in disgust;

But dear one, in Jesus, wash and be clean
His touch is kind; He welcomes you.
Into His presence serene.

Take His hand,
He breaks the chain,
He parts the curtain
He rose again..Leave it behind!

You are new,
in His repair,
Satan is through
You’re no longer caught in his web of despair.

Waning Butterfly Flower – August 2020

Song of the Bluebonnet

Song of the Bluebonnet

Bonnets of blue;
Exquisite hue;
Sing joyous refrain;
To love O so true.

Tailor of a kind;
Tent-maker with twine;
Knit together in pain;
With love O so fine.

To blood be ever bound;
In water’s flood resound;
Faith came, called – no shame;
For love, eternity’s crown.

Jesus, your love, so profound!

All Aboard

August 2020, Galveston, Tx

All Aboard!

Who’s on that train,
And where is it bound?
“Look out, boys,
We’re running aground!

Who’s on the tracks,
And why is he there?
We’ve got a mission
With no time to spare!

Where is the crossing?
It’s not his turn!
Collision is a coming;
‘Less the master brakes burn.

Where’s our conductor?
He’s high engine side;
Where is switch-man?
In the caboose for a ride?

We’re far off the tracks;
Engineer blow the horn!
We need Jesus at the helm
Get on your knees; be reborn.

He knows the way.
Never gonna let you go.
Not on the tracks of no-return
With no plan to get you home!

So wake up in the sleeping car;
This is no childish dream.
Get your ticket for forever;
Shouting, “Build a head of steam!”

This railway travels one way;
The hopper car is full;
The tank engine is pulling;
Heaven bound, the Jesus rule!

All Aboard!

Speak to Me

Three days after writing this poem I scurried out to watch the sunrise from a jetty in Galveston, Tx – August 15, 2019

It was sunrise on August 12, 2019.
Our God was exiting His tent – His storehouse for the day was full and waiting for my discovery when He seemed to say, ”Speak!” and so I did – to myself – on my paper – and eventually onto my computer – and now to share with you! I love you, you know!

I smile every time I write “I love you” and wonder… Does my reader, do you Beloved, really believe me? Oh, yes(!) rest assured Dear Soul that it is true but, even if you cannot believe this; in my love for you, you may most certainly believe it of Jesus’ love. You must! For the love of our God Uncreated who came here in the flesh and who has spoken the language of eternal love from before the existence of time is a love you may declare as good, right and true until the end of all time. His alone is unwavering and he was not surprised by the depth of love; that of sacrifice which would be expected of him so that we could live with him forever. He said it himself as he shared with his disciples!

 20 Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” 21 And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Luke 9: 20-22

Being reminded again of his storehouse richly filled for our every need, perhaps you too will smile and consider the indescribably fathomless depths of the grace and mercy which Jesus so freely gives but is oh so undeserved and wish as I do, to speak to him in the language of Psalms! Better yet, sing!

Maybe this is why I love the waterfall of lavish warmth I feel as I sing liturgy and his Word pours over me as I am… speaking and singing the Word of God; the Psalms back to the very ear of my God who penned them… I don’t ever have to wonder if I have done it well, only whether I have done it at all!

I’m glad I heard and heeded that day. Now, I pray that you are at least uplifted in spirit, edified in Jesus’ name as you read on. May God’s blessings rest upon you.

Speak to Me!

Speak to Me with the language of Psalms;
Speak of the glory of grace.

Sing with the joy of unending song;
Sing with radiance my love, on your face.

Dance with the trumpet and lyre and harp
Dance; arms open wide; “come with haste!”

Run to Me now, I wait longing for you;
Run headlong into My aching embrace.

Tell of My Word; My Life; feet and palms;
Tell of My mercy’s sweet taste!

O, speak to My people with My language of Psalms!
O, worship in My glory, show My grace….

Child, share My mercy …
Give your brother first taste.

In Jesus’ love and mine!

P.S. You know love, I don’t write only of my spiritual life journey and pleasure…sometimes I write about people, places, experiences, likes, worries, cares and things from this side of heaven that are very real to me. If you will allow it, perhaps I may share some of those poems as well. You see, this day on the jetty I also wrote of kisses! eek! I have written of hugs and gazing and stars and other such sweet things as well… I’ll pray about this. You pray, too! – All my love!
